Paradigm shifts in musicological research
I International Congress of the Societat Catalana de Musicologia
Barcelona, 26-29 April 2022
The Catalan Musicological Society of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC) in Barcelona announces the organization of its I International Musicology Conference “Paradigm shifts in Musicology”. The objective is to promote the presentation of music research in the framework of technological advances that are changing scientific approaches to the discipline and in the context of sociocultural developments during a global pandemic and its aftermath. 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the publication of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962), where Thomas Kuhn adopted the term paradigm to refer to the concepts and practices that define a scientific discipline at a given time; since then the term has been very suggestive and already in 1979 Bruno Nettl used it in his article “Paradigms in the History of Ethnomusicology”.
We invite researches to present proposals encompassing all ambits of musicological research in its broadest sense (including: historical musicology, ethnomusicology, theory and analysis, popular music, gender studies, aesthetics, iconography, technology, heritage, education, psychology and performance studies), emphasizing in which way their current research, and Musicology itself, may be affected by paradigm shifts regarding, for instance: topics chosen, questions asked, methodology, equipment used, historiographical perspective, social impact, and interpretation of results. In addition to proposals for individual papers, sessions, posters, and workshops, the Organizing Committee will also consider a reduced number of proposals for roundtables with specialists from diverse disciplines.
